Introduction
The Vandekar family has been in the antiques business for over a hundred and twenty years. Originally based in Amsterdam, in 1916 my grandfather moved to London and did business as Joseph Vandekar. When my father joined, we became Joseph Vandekar & Son, then Joseph & Earle Vandekar Antiques and finally Earle Vandekar Antiques. After being located on the Brompton Road near Harrods for more than 40 years, Knightsbridge was added to the name. During this time, the gallery grew and became respected world-wide for being one of the best antique dealers for antique porcelain & pottery anywhere-carrying high-quality, 18th and 19th-century European and Chinese Export ceramics and other decorative arts. In 1982 I (Paul Vandekar) , a fourth-generation antiques dealer opened in New York where I continue my family's tradition of excellence.
In addition to Chinese, English and European antique porcelain and pottery, I have developed an extensive collection of 19th-century British sailors’ woolworks known as "woolies", and other 18th & 19th century textiles. My company, Earle D. Vandekar of Knightsbridge, also carries a good selection of antique furniture and other unusual pieces of 18th and 19th-century decorative arts such as enamel boxes, garden furniture, shell pictures and brass. We are now building up an excellent collection of Chinese watercolours and engravings from across the world.
Over the years I feel that I have developed a sophisticated and educated eye. After so many years in the business, I don’t just buy stock to sell but, rather, search out for great examples in each of the fields I deal in with the love and passion of a collector and the results have delighted collectors and designers as well as museum curators for the last thirty five years.
