A NAIVE WATERCOLOR OF A BATTLESHIP,
ENGLISH,
Circa 1860.
The ship with three decks of cannon and three masts appears
sailing into a bay between two bodies of land, the sea is rough and
the sky menacing. All hands are on deck and the riggingis fully
manned. The Union Jack flies from one mast and the White Ensign from
the bow. The use of the Union Jack on a ship is the flag of rank for
an Admiral of the Fleet.
The ship is of an interesting construction. It is a model which
was used at the begging of the 19th century but it has been adapted
for steam. This occured for a period of time in the 1850's and '60's.
