A PORTRAIT MINIATURE OF A MAJOR OF THE 57th (WEST MIDDLESEX) REGIMENT OF FOOT,

Either Major Vance Donaldson or Major Harvey Welman,

ANGLO-INDIAN SCHOOL,

Circa 1850.

The Major wears the uniform of the 57th (West Middlesex) Regiment of Foot.  He wears a Military General Service Medal with four bars.  This medal was issued in 1848 for service in the campaigns of 1793-1815.  He sits on a chair facing to his right with one arm tucked into his jacket.  He wears a scarlet uniform with gold epaulets and buttons.  Some flaking to background has been retouched.

There were two individuals who were members of this Regiment and received four bars.  There was a Major Vance Donaldson, who had served in four battles, and thus presumably had four bars and he was alive in 1850 as a retired major.  The other candidate is Major Harvey Welman, who also served in four actions which produced bars.  The 1846 Army List shows him alive and retired.
