A Fine English Enamel Box in the From of a Yellow Pug,

possibly Bilston,

Circa 1770-80.


The oval box in the form of a yellow pug with a collar around its neck, a bell hanging below, lying down on the grassy base.  The flat cover with a rococo surround with a prancing pug depicted within against a background of classical buildings.


Length: 3 1/4 inches


Reference:  See: English Enamel boxes from the 18th to the 20th Centuries by Susan Benjamin, page 26, for a colour plate with the head of a pug.  the colouration and detail is almost identical to this box.  The illustrated box is called Bilston.
