THE NATURAL HISTORY OF CAROLINA, FLORIDA & THE BAHAMA ISLANDS
BY
MARK CATESBY FRS (1682 - 1749)
BIRDS, BEASTS, FISHES, SERPENTS INSECTS & PLANTS

Plate Nos 7, 85, 89, 96, 97, 99.

Mark Catesby was a pioneering ornithologist. His two volume History was first published in 1754 and influenced illustrators such as Solander, Audubon and Gould. It is usually regarded as the first major scientific depiction of New World birds, fish, insect, and plants. It is also quite beautiful.  Catesby's celebrated work, begun in 1729 and not completed until 1747, was the first major illustrated record of the flora and fauna of the British colonies in North America. No comparable publication was undertaken until the first decades of the 19th century.

Plate 7 [appendix] depicts Volubilis Siliquosa Mexicana Plantagini Folio: The Vanelloe
