An American Sailor's Woolwork of an American Ship,

Circa 1865-75.

This woolie, Circa 1865-75, has many wonderful elements. The ship is an American Frigate under sail, with glass beads representing the canons down the side; the sails, outlined in orange, are rendered in the puffed trapunto style creating a distinctive three-dimensional effect with the rigging. The colouration of the work is quite good, with gray and navy bands representing the sea, a pale blue sky with clouds and the American flag whipping in the wind.  Interestingly, there is a bit of felted wool incorporated as smoke coming from the smokestack.

Dimensions: 17 inches x 22 1/4 inches.
