A Chinese Export Toby-Jug Covered Cider Jug, Circa 1780


Chinese Export Ale or Cider Jug with Toby-Jug Decoration,

Circa 1780-95


The jug is of barrel form and painted in famille rose enamels.  On one side Toby Philpot is reciting the first stanza of the poem inspired by Sterne's Tristram Shady: Dear Tom, this brown jug which now foams with mild ale out of... after the English print which was accompanied by the poem when it was first published in 1768.


The reverse is painted with a table laid with a cloth for one, with knife and fork ready and some cold meat on a platter.
