Antique Vauxhall Cross London Delftware Openwork Basket,, Circa 1755.

Antique London Delftware Openwork Basket,

Vauxhall Cross,

Circa 1755.

The Vauxhall delftware openwork bowl is painted with the lotus-pattern, the central flower below radiating petal-shaped panels.  The openwork surrounded by a continuous looping dart band. Tiny frit to inner rim invisibly repaired.

Dimensions: 8 1/2 inch diameter x 2 1/4 inch height.

Traditionally this design is given to Dublin and Liverpool potters among others, in part due to the existence of openwork baskets in this pattern. However, excavations at Vauxhall Cross revealed fragments from similar basketwork, and are discussed by Dennis Cockell, Some Finds of Pottery at Vauxhall Cross, London, E.C.C.Transactions, Vol. 9, Pt. II, pl. 134.
