Antique Chinoiserie Creamware Pottery Teapot & Cover,

Melbourne, Derbyshire,

Circa 1765.


A drum-shaped body with beaded edges, interlaced handle and leaf-molded spout and painted with polychrome enamels with a large Chinese figure to each side.  The cover domed with a flower finial.


Dimensions: 5-1/2 inches high


Reference: Creamware, Donald Towner, Page 116, #55 for teapot with identical form and extremely similar decoration.  On page 110, Towner discusses the form of the spout and the finial as being characterisit f Melboune production.  Further he suggests that the type of Chinoiserie decoration found on this piece were "almost certainly by the same enameller that painted Cockpit Hill earthenware and Derby porcelain."
