Early Staffordshire Pottery Pearlware Cat,

Late 18th Century.

The large pearlware cat sits alert on an oval base with a blue band around its exterior.  The cat, coloured with yellow and brown markings, sits alert, his ears upright and his tail curling around the edge of the base.

Dimensions: 5 3/4 inches high x 5 inches wide x 4 inches deep

Reference: See The Henry H. Weldon Collection: English Pottery, 1650-1800, Leslie B. Grigsby, Page 338, #193 for a pearlware lion of very similar form.  This lion is related to earlier Staffordshire figures made in saltglaze and leadglazed earthenware examples of which can be seen in the Burnap and Earle Collection.
