German Faience (Tin-glazed earthenware) Pewter-mounted Tankard with Bands of Flowers,

Circa 1760.


A cylindrical German tin-glazed earthenware tankard with pewter foot and cover.  The tankard is painted with vertical panels of alternating polychrome double flowers and a swirl design centered with a yellow flower all on a dark blue ground.  Centered between the panels, which have a triangular end, are yellow three-petalled flowers  To the rim and foot is a double thin blue band and a wider yellow band framing the design between.  The exterior of the handle has a series of thick blue dashes.  The handle is attached to the upper end of the handle with a well-designed leaf swirl.  The cover with initial HMM.  The inside of the cover is marked with a touchmark of a rampant stag and AH above.
