British Sailor's Woolwork of The Sophia, Circa 1870-80.

British Sailor's Woolwork of The Sophia,

Circa 1870-80.

A rather spectacular woolwork of a starboard view of the ship Sophia, named on the hull, coming into land, a lighthouse in the distance.  What makes this woolie so charming and outstanding is the unusual treatment of the sky and sea with the use of various blues and ziz zag designs to show a rough sea. The ship itself, flying the Red Ensign as a Merchant Navy vessel, is depicted with its large complement of square-rigged sails and company flags as it comes into shore under full sail.
