Ralph Wood Figure of A Deer

Ralph Wood Figure of A Deer,

 1785,

Perhaps John Wood of Brownhills or Ralph & Enoch Wood of Burslem,

(NY8986)

The pearlware figure of a hind is press-moulded and sits on a domed hollow mould with clay threads imitating grass.  The figure is painted naturalistically with coloured glazes.

The author below has suggested that the model was most likely based on porcelain examples from the Bow factory.

Reference: The Henry H. Weldon Collection-English Pottery, Stoneware and Earthenware 1650-1800,  page 373, # 226 for this model of a hind.
