English Bristol Delftware Adam & Eve Dish,

The Temptation,

(Redcliff Back),

Circa 1745-55.

The charger is decorated in polychrome with a sponged blue border and a central scene of Adam and Eve with the serpent entwined around a tree with an apple in its mouth.

Dimensions: Diameter: 13 inches

Provenance: W.L. Little Collection, #14.

Reference:  Delftware at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Michael Archer, Page 27, #A: 43, where the design is called The Temptation.  Archer writes that....This charger which belongs to a small group, introduces a new composition.  The painting is poor, there is little attempt to create a naturalistic setting and maximum use is made of sponging.

the same treatment of the scene appears  on two dated objects.  The first, a plaque, has the date 1751 and the other a dish of conventional mid-century form with the inscription John Archer/1755.

Downman, p. 95
