American Portrait Miniature of a Woman,

Signed by Christopher Greiner,

Philadelphia or Reading, Pennsylvania,

Circa 1840


The portrait miniature of a woman is encased within a hinged pressed metal carrying case.  She wears a black dress with a white lace shawl and a long gold necklace hangs from her neck agianst a typical dark green background.


Marks: Signer to the lower right by arm Greiner.


Dimensions: 2 1/2 inches x 2 1/8 inches

Christopher M. Greiner worked in Philadelphia and Reading, Pennsylvania, between 1837 and 1864 & exhibited at the Artists' Fund Society in 1844.


The Smithsonian American Art Museum has one miniature by Greiner.


He emigrated from Europe, probably from Germany.
