Staffordshire Pearlware Pair of Large Candlestick Figure Groups,

"Liberty & Matrimony" & "The Flute Player",

Probably By Enoch Wood or Ralph Wood Jr.,

Circa 1790-1810

Each pearlware figural group depicts a young man and woman on a moss covered rock with a stream cascading down between them.  


One group depicts a young man holding a large bird cage on his right knee with his female companion holding a bird from the cage on her left hand.  In her other hand she holds a posy of flowers.  On the base, a lamb drinks from the stream, while a swan sits nearby.


The other figure depicts a shepherd with a pipe to his mouth and his dog sitting by his legs while his female companion listens to his playing by his side.  A sheep and a goat lie at their feet.


Condition: Birdseller- edge of sconce, girl's right arm off/on & swan neck

Flute player-Edge of sconce, dog head off/on, tip of leaves, goat's horns & sheep's ear.


Dimensions:

Bird Seller & companion: 11 1/2 inches x 5 1/2 inches wide x 4 3/4 inches deep;

Shepherd & Shepherdess: 11 3/4 inches x 5 1/2 inches wide x 4 3/4 inches deep.
